What does a petrochemical plant do?
Petrochemical plants produce petrochemicals which are chemical products that have been converted from natural resources like petroleum or crude oil. Natural gas, shale gas or coal can also be the base resource for chemical compounds produced by petrochemical plants. End-user products that are made from petrochemicals include fuel, fertilizer or oils as well as everyday items such as credit cards, milk jugs or appliances.
Ferrostaal’s expertise in planning, financing and constructing petrochemical plants
The main focus of Ferrostaal's respective Ferrostaal Topsoe Projects activities in this area is project development, financing and EPC contracting. Regarding project development incl. equity participation for petrochemical plants, Ferrostaal is responsible for project concept, technology assessment and project financing to ensure completeness of scope and plant performance. Ferrostaal offers general contracting of a broad portfolio of plants (downstream) with a focus on natural gas based commodity petrochemicals. Ferrostaal has experience as a general contractor or partner in international consortia and can manage and integrate all the main processes of constructing petrochemical plants. Ferrostaal is also able to take over the partial ownership of petrochemical plants together with partners for a given time period. Ferrostaal is able to provide long-term quality management of petrochemical plants as Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractor.

On the different petrochemicals plant which have been realized by Ferrostaal and their partners, there are several petrochemical compounds being produced:
Ammonia, one of the key products of Ferrostaal's petrochemical plants endeavors, Ammonia can be used as a fertilizer and as a part of the creation of other compounds. It is the base product for more refined processes.
Ammonia nitrate is a downstream product and often produced on the same complex as pure ammonia. It is classified as a salt and mainly used as a fertilizer.
Urea can also be used as a fertilizer and as a key component in the process of creating other compounds such as melamine.
As a so called downstream product, melamine, which can be used as part of the mixture for adhesives, is one of the refined products providing a higher revenue for clients than its basic compounds.
Olefins are a type of hydrocarbons which are mostly used in the petrochemical industry. The most common olefins are ethylene and propylene. These compounds are mostly used in the production of consumer goods.
Ferrostaal has built one of the largest methanol production plants in the world: the M5000 on Trinidad & Tobago. Methanol is an alcohol and a versatile chemical that is used in thousands of products of daily life.

The future of realizing petrochemical plants: Ferrostaal Topsoe Projects
In early 2015 Ferrostaal GmbH and the Danish company Haldor Topsoe A/S, a catalysis and related process technologies specialist, announced a 50/50 joint venture called Ferrostaal Topsoe Projects. The joint venture is a one-stop shop for industrial plants in the petrochemicals, refinery and environmental technology sectors: it combines distinctive know-how in project development and facilitation of investments with world-leading process technologies. Ferrostaal Topsoe Projects is based in the Ferrostaal headquarters in Essen, Germany.
