Solar tower technology
Modular, flexible, efficient
Solar tower technology offers a cost-effective solution. Computer software controls mirror fields to precisely track the sun and reflect sunlight onto a tower mounted receiver. High levels of efficiency and accuracy, mass-manufactured components, and a unique modular design represent distinctive features of solar thermal technology.
Compared to linear concentration solutions, eSolar's awardwinning tower technology permits higher concentrations and operating temperatures thereby enabling solar thermal heat to be efficiently converted into electricity. Our many years of engineering expertise ensure that full advantage is taken of the
high efficiency of solar tower plants: As an experienced general contractor in plant construction with know-how in the project development, project management and project financing sectors, Ferrostaal, together with its technology partner eSolar, implements plants based on tower technology.
eSolar’s multi-tower approach is based on a modular system comprising scalable tower segments, generating power equal to 4 MWe each. Thousands of mirrors reflect sunlight onto a receiver mounted on top of a tower. The focused heat boils water within the receiver and generates high-temperature steam, which powers a turbine to produce electricity. eSolar’s revolutionary sun-tracking system allows heliostats to concentrate sunlight with unprecedented accuracy.
As the high level of standardisation means that the components can be produced industrially, the plants can be massmanufactured and pre-assembled at the factory. Mirror fields are built using basic hand tools and require a minimum of training, thereby minimising installation time and costs. Deployment is fast, efficient, and cost-effective. As a result of the modular approach, a repeating structure and a calibration system eliminates the need for high-precision surveying, delicate installation, and individual alignment of mirrors.
Solar power technology from eSolar is already in operation in Southern California, and the company has 3, 5000 MW in signed global contracts across the US, India and China. Together with our technology partner we are active on many world markets in order to ensure the perfect interplay of eSolar’s technological approach and our engineering expertise to provide maximum benefit for our customers.
