For the previously governmental oil and gas group Petrom, in which OMV today holds a 51 percent share, Ferrostaal erected a compressor station in Romania, Bulbuceni. From there, the compressed gas will be delivered into the national gas network by Transgaz, the governmental gas transportation company. The new construction is a part of the widespread upgrading of the Romanian gas network projected by Petrom.

Renovation of the gas transportation system

For modernizing the Romanian gas network in the region of Hurezani, the construction of the compressor station is an important element. Now, after bringing the three units into service, the facility increases the pressure of the gas from an ethane extracting plant in Turburea and a gas drying plant in Bulbuceni to up to 40 bars. So Petrom can continuously deliver gas to the national transportation system. As the latest facility of its kind in Romania, the compressor station replaces an old one nearby, which didn’t comply with today’s standards anymore. The new compressor station stands out due to its less frequent need for maintenance and a lower noise development, compared to other facilities of its kind. Up-to-date safety standards like a flare stack to burn off gas in dangerous situations satisfy customer and residents. Ferrostaal trained Petrom-employees in operating and maintaining the station.

Construction in record time

In November 2009 Ferrostaal received the EPCC (engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning) contract for about 65 million Euros for the erection of the new compressor station in Bulbuceni, a village approximately 200 kilometres west of Bukarest. Already in February of the same year, Ferrostaal was entrusted with the Early Works. After signing the Lump Sum Turnkey contract for the compressor station in November, Ferrostaal was able to finalize the first unit already by end of May 2010. About two weeks later the second and after that again a few weeks later the third and last unit followed. Thus the facility of the OMV-Share was erected in just 16 instead of the usual 24 month.
